Officials say the pilot attempted to escape, but eventually crashed when one of the plane's engines failed. The location of the crash was off of the northern coast near Puerto, Colombia. An unidentified body of a man was discovered with a Mexican passport among the wreckage.
"A plane en route from Venezuela and loaded with cocaine crashed into the Caribbean Sea while being pursued by the Colombian air force. The airplane, a Hawker 600, which left Venezuela and was destined for Central America, was detected in the early hours of today when it illegally entered Colombian air space."
Since 2013, Venezuelan officials say they have shot down or neutralized 90 planes carrying more than 180 tons of cocaine.
