KFC said that their Chinese competitors claimed that the American fast food company uses genetically modified chickens with six wings and eight legs.
KFC's lawsuit parallels the Chinese government's recent efforts in a campaign to clean up rumors spread on social media. Marketing firms in China have been convicted in the past of posting falsified information about their competitors.
The three companies being sued were named as Shanxi Weilukuang Technology Company Ltd., Taiyuan Zero Point Technology Company and Yingchenanzhi Success and Culture Communication Ltd. based out of Shenzhen.
Kentucky Fried Chicken remains China's biggest fast food chain with over 4,600 restaurant locations.
